"My 'Helpful' Tip to a Tourist Ended Up Sparking a Neighborhood Feud"

Living in a popular tourist spot like Epping, you get used to answering the same questions over and over: "Where's the nearest koala sanctuary?", "How do I get to the Harbour Bridge?", "Is Vegemite actually edible?". I usually try to be helpful, offering directions and local insights with a smile. But sometimes, my attempts to be a good Samaritan backfire spectacularly.
Last week, I was walking home from the shops when I saw a group of bewildered-looking tourists huddled over a map on the corner of my street. They looked utterly lost, so I approached them, ready to offer my local expertise.
"G'day, folks! You look a bit turned around. Can I help you find something?" I asked, trying to sound as friendly and approachable as possible.
A woman with a large sun hat looked up, her face etched with confusion. "Yes, please! We're trying to get to the Epping train station. Our map is… not making much sense."
"Ah, the station! Easy peasy," I said confidently. "Just head down this street for about two blocks, then turn left at the bakery with the big sausage roll sign. You can't miss it."
They thanked me profusely, and I continued on my way, feeling like a helpful local hero. Little did I know, my well-intentioned directions were about to ignite a neighborhood war.
The next day, I woke up to a furious banging on my door. It was Mrs. Henderson, the owner of the bakery on the corner. Her face was red, and she was clutching a printout of a rather scathing review she'd just received online.
"This is your fault!" she practically yelled, thrusting the review under my nose. It read: "Asked a local for directions to the train station. They told us to turn left at the 'bakery with the big sausage roll sign.' There were TWO bakeries! We chose the wrong one and ended up walking an extra mile in the wrong direction. Thanks for nothing, 'helpful' local!"
My stomach dropped. There were two bakeries on that corner – Mrs. Henderson's lovely little patisserie with its elegant pastries, and the other, slightly more down-market bakery a bit further down the street that did, indeed, have a very large, very prominent sausage roll sign. In my haste to be helpful, I hadn't even considered the existence of the other bakery.
"Oh, Mrs. Henderson, I am so sorry!" I stammered, feeling terrible. "I didn't even think…"
But she was having none of it. "My bakery doesn't do 'big sausage roll signs'! We have croissants and scones! Now I have a one-star review calling my establishment 'the wrong bakery'! My online reputation is ruined!"
The feud escalated quickly. Mrs. Henderson started putting up signs outside her bakery: "For quality pastries, turn left at the charming patisserie!" The other bakery retaliated with an even bigger sausage roll sign and a banner proclaiming: "For real Aussie tucker, this way!".
The tourists, I'm sure, were even more confused than before. My neighbours, who had previously exchanged polite nods, were now engaged in a full-blown bakery battle, all thanks to my unintentionally vague directions.
I tried to apologize to Mrs. Henderson again, even offering to write a glowing review of her croissants. But she just huffed and told me to stick to giving directions to the koala sanctuary.
So, Reddit, has anyone else's attempt to be helpful gone horribly wrong? Have you ever inadvertently started a neighborhood feud with a simple piece of advice? I think I'll stick to pointing people towards landmarks that are less prone to causing existential bakery crises. Maybe I should just carry a detailed map of Epping with me at all times.
